Actress Garcelle Beauvais recently opened up about the time a stranger mistook her for a nanny when she was with her biracial children.
On Bravo’s Race In America: A Movement Not a Moment roundtable discussion hosted by E!’s Nina Parker, Garcelle Beauvais explained the incident. “I had someone think that I was my kids’ nanny. And she said something to me in Spanish and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t speak Spanish,’ and she said, ‘You’d make more money if you spoke Spanish,’ and I thought ‘Well, does Telemundo pay a lot? As an actress, maybe I need to speak Spanish,’” recalled Beauvais, assuming that the woman was talking about an acting role.
“When she realized one of my boys came up to me — and they were smaller — and he said, ‘Mommy,’ and she completely turned bright red and ran off because she realized they were actually my kids. So, you see it in all different ways, almost on a daily basis,” Beauvais said about experiencing racism.
Garcelle Beauvais has three children: her 29-year-old son Oliver Saunders with her ex Daniel Saunders, and her 12-year-old twin sons Jaid and Jax Nilon with her second ex-husband Mike Nilon. Since the fathers of all her kids are White, Beauvais wasted no time in educating them about racism, starting when they turned three.
