Due to the coronavirus pandemic, prom night at schools nationwide have been canceled, but Former First Lady Michelle Obama is providing the next best thing, a virtual prom celebration for high school seniors.
Michelle Obama’s non-profit organization When We All Vote, joined with MTV to present “Prom-athon,” a virtual prom event for the class of 2020. MTV’s “Prom-athon” serves to link prom with another milestone high school seniors go through, registering to vote for the first time. In February 2020, the 2020 Prom Challenge selected 20 high schools around the nation that managed to integrate voter registration “in the most creative and impactful ways.”

Michelle Obama recently surprised the student leaders of the 20 winning schools with a Zoom video call, congratulating them on their work. May 2020 is looking to be quite eventful for the Obama Family so far. On May 6, Michelle Obama’s Netflix documentary Becoming was released. An adaptation of Michelle Obama’s bestselling 2018 memoir Becoming, the documentary takes an intimate look at Michelle’s life and even features the first public interview from her daughters Malia and Sasha Obama.
To add, Michelle is not the only Obama honoring the high school class of 2020 in May. Her husband, President Barack Obama, is set to deliver a commencement speech at the “Graduate Together: America Honors the Class of 2020” event, a star-studded prime-time special that will celebrate the high school class of 2020. Executive produced by NBA great LeBron James, “Graduate Together” will air on ABC, FOX, CBS, NBC and many streaming platforms on May 16 at 8 p.m. ET.
