Ahmaud Arbery was murdered by two gunmen on February 23, 2020, while taking a jog around his neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia. The Glynn County district attorney attempted to block the arrests of the two men, which is why it took two months for the gunmen to be brought up on charges for murder.
It was only after the video of Ahmaud’s killing went viral that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) took over the case. The GBI deemed the evidence as sufficient for murder charges within 36 hours of its investigation.
Alicia Keys and the family joined others in walking for 2.23 miles in honor of what would have been Ahmaud Arbery’s twenty-sixth birthday this past weekend. “Today my family and I ran 2.23 miles to honor Ahmaud Arbery,” Alicia shared with her Instagram fans. “Sending super love to his family and especially his mama today on Mother’s Day,” the award-winning recording artist said. “Let’s keep lifting him and his family.”
Mashonda joined Alicia, Swizz, and the kids on the run. “Before this glorious day ends, I want to show extreme gratitude to my baby’s other mother,” Mashonda wrote to Alicia Keys on Sunday.

“Thank you so much for holding this child close to your heart and supporting him with his homeschooling and emotional needs over the course of these past two crazy months,” the celebrity mom said. “Even though my heart ached due to his absence, I found great peace knowing that you were the woman holding his hand and putting him to sleep at night.
