Many people are unsure of when they want to have children, if at all, but for Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon, she knew that she wanted to have children when she met her husband, dancer Azuka Ononye. Dixon and Ononye, who married in 2017, have two children together, 6-year-old Azura and 6-month-old Ananya Ononye.
On April 7, Alesha Dixon joined Giovanna Fletcher on her podcast, Happy Mum, Happy Baby to discuss all things parenthood, including her reluctance to have children before meeting Ononye. Dixon revealed that her reluctance stemmed from her traumatic experiences of seeing her mother abused by her partner as a child. “It took me many years to repair from some of the things that I saw you know right into adulthood to recover from the things and I thought I’m not going to do that to a child.”
Alesha Dixon also explained that she was reluctant to have children due to the previous toxic relationships she was in. “The thought of having children with someone who could show something toxic or show them something toxic that I saw as a child, frightened me more than anything in the world so it was so important for me that the person I had children with, the relationship had to healthy, their mind had to be healthy,” said Dixon. “I’d rather have had no children than bring them into the wrong environment.”
Fortunately for Alesha Dixon, she met Ononye in 2010 and he changed her “whole thinking from that point of view.” Dixon elaborated on how she and Ononye found love and her realization that she wanted to build a family with him. “We met 10 years ago, and he was the first person that I’d met, that I knew that we could have children together because of our values, our morals, our thinking aligned,” said Dixon. “Very much on the same page, same belief system. I trust him as a human being. I knew he would be an incredible Dad.” Today, Dixon and Ononye are proud parents of two adorable daughters and are considering having another baby.
