In the wake of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, Sony Pictures pushed back the release dates of almost its entire movie lineup to 2021. But for the movie Fatherhood, Sony instead moved its release date up from January 15, 2021 to October 23, 2020.
Fatherhood is a movie adaptation of the 2011 novel Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love, by Matthew Logelin. The film focuses on Matt (played by actor/comedian Kevin Hart), a single father who is left to raise his daughter Maddy alone after his wife Liz passes away hours after childbirth. The story details Matt’s marriage, how he raised his daughter following his wife’s death, and the supportive online community of strangers that ended up becoming his friends.

Fatherhood features quite a loaded cast. In addition to Kevin Hart in the starring role as Matt, actress Melody Hurd plays Maddy, Matt’s daughter and actress Deborah Ayorinde plays Liz, Matt’s wife. The film also has Emmy-winning actress Alfre Woodard appearing as a character named Marian and actor Anthony Carrigan plays a character named Oscar. Actor/comedian Lil Rel Howery also has a role in the film, playing a character named Jordan. The film is directed by Paul Weitz, who directed the films About a Boy and the classic comedy American Pie.
Kevin Hart has promoted the film on social media, and even shared on Instagram his meeting with Matthew Logelin and his real-life daughter Maddy Logelin on set, praising Matthew’s strength and his bond with Maddy. “What this man has been thru is unreal….he is the definition of Tru strength in my eyes…he lost his wife after she delivered their baby at the hospital. His life took a turn that he never saw coming….while facing his darkest moment in his life he was left with the responsibility of raising his child. Nobody believed in him or his ability to step up to the plate…but he did it,” says Kevin Hart.
