Coco Gauff is well on her way to accomplishing her goal of having a place among the ranks of Serena and Venus Williams. The 15-year-old won her match against reigning champion Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open.
“You don’t want to lose to a 15-year-old,” Osaka said after suffering a loss to Gauff at Melbourne on Friday. Coco won the final match in a game that was extremely close down to the very end.
“Her serve is way better,” Osaka said of Gauff’s improved performance since playing the 15-year-old last year at the U.S. Open. Naomi ultimately beat Coco at the tournament and offered words of encouragement after the teen became emotional about the loss. This year, however, is proving itself to be the year of Coco Gauff.
“Honestly, like, what is my life,” Coco asked after winning her match against Naomi on Friday. “Like, oh, my gosh,” the teen exclaimed. “Two years ago, I lost first round in juniors, and now I’m here. This is crazy!”
Coco Gauff beat legendary tennis star, Venus Williams, during the first round of the Australian Open. “I just want to say thank you guys,” Coco said after winning the match. “You guys were chanting my name and I only thought that would happen at the U.S. Open,” the teen said. “To hear that here in Australia means a lot to me,” Coco shared.
Coco Gauff will go on to compete against Sofia Kenin in the next round of the Australian Open. Stay tuned for more young stars news!
