Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” says director Rob Marshall.
The Little Mermaid remake is directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film will feature songs from the animated classic by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as new songs by Menken (music) and Miranda (lyrics).
Halle and her sister Chloe make up the R&B group known as Chloe x Halle. The duo are signed to Beyoncé’s record label Parkwood Entertainment and have opened for the mega star on her “Lemonade” tour. The pair also star on the ABC sitcom “Grown-ish,” a spinoff of “Black-ish” created by Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore.
Production for the Little Mermaid is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
