Chance The Rapper took to Instagram this past Sunday to honor his wife and the mother of his 3-year-old daughter, Kensli. His kind words to Kirsten Corley rubbed a few folks the wrong way, though.
“Marriage is dope cause I get to live with a mama forever,” Chance told his Instagram fans. The celebrity father clarified by saying, “Not my mama, but it d*mn near feels like it sometimes.” Chance ended his note by expressing gratitude towards Kirsten. “Thank you [for] bringing Kensli into this world but also for occasionally being a mommy to me,” the star dad said.
The part about Kirsten being an occasional mother to Chance rubbed a few people the wrong way. “Ahh man. Def not getting married now,” one critic said in reference to Chance’s Mother’s Day note. Another commenter was more forward with her scrutiny. “Women/wives should not have to mother a grown man. We don’t want to raise you.”
This is not the first time that a celebrity father has been scrutinized for making a comparison between his wife and mother. Pastor John Gray of Relentless Church endured strong pushback after he told the ladies of Sister Circle that his wife, Aventer Gray, “birthed” him.
“My wife has endured more pain birthing me than both of our children,” Pastor Gray said. “She has sacrificed, these last eight years, uncovering the painful areas of my manhood and covering the areas that could have exposed me. She deserves anything I can give her.”
Pastor John Gray’s comments raised a debate about whether or not wives should take on the role of raising their husbands. Many argued that a man should be developed enough to take care of his family without needing more support from his wife than he is capable of giving. Some, however, understood what both Pastor Gray and Chance The Rapper meant by their statements.
“The utter misery in these comments, child,” one social media fan said after reading the backlash Chance received for his Mother’s Day post. “Y’all have never catered to your significant other,” the defender asked. “Did he say thanks for wiping my a*s and cleaning up after me? Do you know how domestic Chance is? This man breathes family! By the emojis alone you can tell he means taking care of him while he’s sick…etc. … Y’all are sad.”
Kensli is Chance The Rapper and Kirsten’s oldest child. The couple is expecting their second child to arrive in the coming months.
