Robert De Niro and wife Grace Hightower have opted to seek a divorce after more than 20 years of marriage and two kids together. An insider tells PEOPLE that the couple is currently separated and making plans to go through marriage dissolution.
“Sometimes things don’t work out the way you hope or want them to,” the source tells the media source. This is the second time that Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower have stared down the barrel of divorce. Robert filed for marriage dissolution in 1999, which was two years after the couple’s wedding, but never completed the process. He and his bride were able to work things out to the extent of renewing their vows in 2004. Robert De Niro told attendees at his wedding vows renewal ceremony that he wanted to “make sure this one sticks,” in reference to his and Grace Hightower’s relationship.
The estranged couple has two children – Elliott, 20, and Helen Grace,6, – together. Robert recently opened up about the challenges attached to parenthood. “There are great moments and moments of sadness,” De Niro said. “Sometimes you’re the last person they want to deal with. It’s like when you walk your kids to school and they get older and they don’t want to hold your hand or kiss you goodbye.”
Robert De Niro has four other children – Drena, Raphael, Julian, and Aaron – in addition to the two he parents with Grace Hightower. Stay tuned for more celebrity family news!
