Amid fan reaction to the lighter appearance of Princess Tiana in the anticipated movie, Ralph Breaks the Internet, due out in November 2018, Disney has decided to reanimate scenes that feature the African-American princess from the 2009 hit, Princess and the Frog.
If you remember, the scene in the movie that had everyone speaking out was the one where all of the Disney Princesses were lounging around during a pajama party. Princess Tiana was lighter, with a narrower nose, and different hair texture, making her “racially ambiguous.”
To accomplish their goal, Disney animators worked with representatives form Color of Change, a racial justice organization, to adjust the character to look more like her original move version. Color of Change stated that Disney made the right decision to “restore Princess Tiana’s image to that of an unapologetically black princess with full lips, dark skin and dark hair.”
