Jill Scott was on the receiving end of unnecessary criticism this past weekend after she shared a video clip of her son, Jett, singing.
Jett effortlessly took on the extremely high note in Minnie Ripperton’s legendary song, “Loving You.” Many professional singers do not even fathom tackling the note. “The Boy say, ‘Mom, record this.’ Really,” Jill Scott said in response to her son’s incredible vocal skills. “Wow,” one of Jill’s social media followers commented. “[The] Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Another fan agreed by saying, “That voice is everything. Just like his mom.”
One would think that, with Jett’s natural abilities to slay in the area of vocal performance, people would only celebrate Jill Scott’s son. One would, sadly, be wrong. A few critics gave their unwarranted opinions online that presented the notion of Jill trying the “feminize” her child. One troll even went so far as to suggest that Jill give her son a football as a way of exposing him to masculinity.
“This might be the dumbest thing ever,” one of Jill’s defenders said in response to the ignorant advice. “He’s being feminized because he’s singing Minnie Ripperton,” the fan asked. “Football makes not one masculine, nor does playing outside on trees. This type of density is really tragic and dated.”
Still, there were those instant child development specialists who apparently knew best. “As single mamas, we tend to make them mama boys,” one critic said. “I’m guilty of this as well but I realized I need to raise my son to be the man that’s going be great father and husband to his wife.”
Had followers paid attention to Jill Scott and Jett’s journey before speaking, they would have realized that the celebrity mom is rearing her son to be an upstanding young man. “It matters to me how he views me,” Scott said during a 2015 interview with ESSENCE. “It matters that I’ve done the best I can to make a good decision because everything that I do is shaping who he is. I love him more every day and I want to be an example.”
