Do you know why your kids are stressed? It’s school. The answer almost always comes back to school.
It doesn’t matter how old your kids are or what grade they’re in. Even the most conscientious student is stressing about school in one way or another. The combination of schoolwork, peer pressure, grades and social life eventually gets to everyone.
Maybe that’s why the Partnership for a Drug-Free America tells us that one in five teens has abused prescription drugs. Of all prescription drugs that are abused, Adderall is the most commonly abused stimulant. The following are common reasons why teens abuse drugs:
- Feel better
- Reduce anxiety
- Spend more time studying
- Become more alert
- Enhance academic performance
How to Help Your Teen Manage Their School-Related Stress
If you want to help your kids manage stress in healthy ways, the key is to get involved early. If your child is already abusing prescription drugs, it may be too late. Still, it doesn’t hurt to teach them stress-management skills because these will help them through recovery and beyond.
Encourage exercise
Exercise is one of the best natural stress relievers we have. And it’s also the first thing to fall by the wayside when kids get busy with schoolwork. Help your teens manage their time so that they can find time for exercise. Regular exercise can also boost your teen’s self-confidence, which often improves their mood.
