Mariska Hargitay is the star of a hit series, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, that’s been running for nearly twenty years and the proud mother of three children. She certainly loves her job and babies, but even Hargitay must admit that the balance between home and work is a thin line.
“It’s hard. I’m not going to say it’s easy, it’s hard. I’m learning to [balance]. I try to be super present with where I am,” the celebrity mom tells media. “When I’m at work, I’m at work. When I’m with my kids, I’m with my kids,” she says of keeping the balance in check.
Mariska also attributes much of her success as mom and star actress to her husband, Peter Hermann. “I have an incredible support system with my husband,” she says. “He’s an actor so he also understands,” Hargitay explains. “I try to keep it organic. The kids come to set all the time. I have worked out my schedule a bit that I have a little more flexibility. I have a great time behind me.”
Still, even with a husband who knows show business and a flexible schedule, Mariska Hargitay sometimes finds herself overwhelmed. “There are days I go home and just cry,” the star mom admits. “There have been days when I didn’t see my kids. Those are the days I’m, like, ‘Maybe I’m done,'” Hargitay explains. “But now, this is a gift of doing something for 20 years. We’re such a well-oiled machine. I go in there and I’m like, ‘Guys, I’ve got a kids thing. I’m out.’ They’re like, ‘Got it, boom.'”
Mariska Hargitay has two sons, August and Andrew, and a daughter named Amaya. Catch her every week in her star role as Olivia Benson on NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
