What was Jada Pinkett Smith’s reaction to her son, Jaden Smith, wanting to move out at the age of 15-years-old? Total devastation.
“At 15 years old, Jaden, and I remember this day specifically, it’s probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life,” Jada says during the most recent episode of Red Table Talk in which she delved into life alongside both Jaden and her daughter, Willow. “[Jaden], you got to a point where you told me straight up, you were like, ‘Mom, I have to leave here to live my life.'” That was the point when Jaden asked his mom for legal emancipation.
“I remember thinking to myself, as devastated as I was, I was like, ‘He’s right.’ The time is now. He’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.” Jaden, of course, decided not to go through with the emancipation but Jada understood why her son considered moving out at such a young age.
“Every child needs something different,” Jada reveals. “Being in this lifestyle, in this world is a bubble and he wanted out. I understood that because I didn’t have the bubble. I knew what having my freedom outside the bubble, what I gained from that. I knew the sooner I let him go, the faster he was going to come back.”
Most parents would have expressed strong objection to their teenager seeking emancipation. Jada, however, continues to revolutionize parenting and teach us something new. Check out her full Red Table Talk alongside Jaden and Willow Smith in the clip below!
At the Red Table this week, Jaden Smith and Willow Smith reveal what it's like growing up in one of the most famous families in America. Adrienne Banfield Norris (Gammy) wonders if the kids may have been granted too much independence by their parents Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith.
