Mashonda Tifrere is celebrating the notion of blended families in her new book, Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family. The singer tells PEOPLE exclusively how she, Alicia Keys, and Swizz Beatz maintain harmonious relationships.

“Six years ago, my [then] 5-year-old son asked me why his father and I didn’t like each other anymore. I realized that he was reacting to our lack of communication and unity as parents. It was a wake-up call,” Mashonda tells media. “Co-parenting and blending is a universal topic and many don’t know where to begin,” she admitted. “This book will serve as the inspiration and blueprint that is needed to raise emotionally and mentally healthy children.”

Evidence of unity is certainly present in the publication as both Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz have words regarding co-parenting in the book. “With a dedicated chapter for fathers written by Swizz and a heartfelt foreword penned by Alicia, the three of us are raising our voices to help generations of families worldwide,” Mashonda tells PEOPLE. “I’m certain that the book will become a toolbox for mindful parents all over the world.”

This certainly isn’t the first time that Mashonda Tifrere has advocated for peace when co-parenting. It was just a few years ago that the celebrity mom shared a few tips that she’s learned while rearing her son, Kasseem Dean, Jr., alongside Swizz Beatz.

“It’s okay to be hurt and angry, but your feelings don’t have to dictate your behavior,” Tifrere told fellow single parents. “Instead, let what’s best for your kids—you working cooperatively with the other parent—motivate your actions.”
