FOUR REASONS NOT TO WORRY ABOUT SCREEN TIME FOR YOUR CHILD

How much time is too much time for screen time? With the surge in technology usage among kids, that is one question that parents seem to grapple with on a daily basis.

True, there are more and more online learning centers, websites, etc, in addition to many cartoons and t.v. shows that are now available for kids online as well. Many parents encourage their children to use these educational tools, while at the same time, allowing for game time but tend to limit screen time or even use that as the proverbial dangling carrot for behavior.

Well, listen up, because, according to Popsugar.com, here are four reasons why parents should not worry about screen time usage at all! In actuality, they should see it as a benefit.

1. As mentioned above, it can be educational. There are thousands of tools on the internet that are specially designed by educators and specialists for children. Ranging from videos to interactive learning games, children can learn online instead of just playing. Students can find websites that teach them how to code such as code.org or even help them to learn their ABC’s and 123’s. Don’t think that just because they are online, that they are not learning.

2. The internet promotes technological literacy. Let’s face it, if you don’t know how to navigate the internet, an iPad, iPhone, etc. etc., you are way behind the times. Technology isn’t going anywhere, in actuality, it is getting more and more complicated and intricate by the day. So, if your little rock star can help you program your iPhone while showing you around the XBox system, then let them and encourage them.

3. The Internet helps connect family. The internet can bring a family that is spread out all over the country, if not the world, closer together. Grandma and grandpa, aunts, uncles, and honorary family members don’t have to miss out on little Johnny’s birthday just because they are miles away. Thanks to FaceTime and YouTube, etc. they will stay in the know and when you get the opportunity to actually visit in person, they will be all caught up.

4. Mom and dad can take a break. Allowing children screen time gives mom and dad that coveted “me” time that they don’t get very often. Let the kids play with their tablets while you relax, make dinner, or simply tune-into your favorite television show. Take advantage of the break while they plug-in.
