Fathers and daughters definitely have a special bond. Often more than not, we hear the joke about a young woman ending up “marrying someone like her father.” Well, that is actually more true than not.
When it comes to future romantic connections for young women, dear old dad “is your first male role model-good or bad-and that relationship often shapes how [women] view men,” Atlanta-based psychologist Dr. Sherry Blake explained in an interview with Essence Magazine. Blake goes on to say that, “there are many ways relationships with our fathers can affect our own romantic ones.”
Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise that a young girl who is secure in her relationship with her father from the start is more likely to have well-adjusted relationships in the future, be more confident with physical appearance, body weight, and be less likely to develop clinical depression.
So dads, when it comes to tea time, playing with Barbie, or just relaxing in front of the t.v., just know that you are doing more for your daughter than you could have ever imagined.
