Becoming a mom has taught Laila Ali everything from time management to prioritization. The former boxer tells Refinery29 that her kids, Sydney and Curtis Jr., help her in more ways than one.
“When you become a mom you realize you don’t have time to fool around anymore,” Laila says. “Your time is more valuable, and you’re more selective about how you spend it, and you really get focused because you’re not doing it just for yourself, you’re doing it for your children.”
Laila has done a lot in the name of motherhood with her time, which includes campaigns spreading awareness about hygiene for kids. The celebrity mom has also completed projects for her personal ambitions. “I think in general people assume that when you have children, that’s all you are — a mom, and that’s actually not true,” Ali shares. “You can be a mother and still pursue your dreams,” she adds.

“I think motherhood impacts everything,” Laila further delves. “That’s why I think it’s so important to speak to women about, even though you have a child, never let your dreams or aspirations die. You might put ’em on hold, but you can get back to it.”

Sydney celebrated her sixth birthday earlier this month. Little Curtis turns 9-years-old in August. Laila also has three bonus children by marriage to Curtis Conway Sr.
