Have you ever thought about what it means to be a good dad? Unfortunately, being a parent does not come with a “how to” manual and seems like the role is constantly evolving just like society; however, there are some things that should be a standard for all fathers-helping to nurture children, help to build their self-esteem, be supportive, be engaged, and so on.
Here are a few tips for dads that will unquestionably get them nominated for father-of-the year!
1. Spend time with your child and get involved early. Before you know it, your child will not be a little one anymore and will only look to you for your debit card and car keys. The time to bond is when they are young and want you around you. Get involved in their school activities, extra curricular’s, etc., letting them know that you will be there cheering them on and supporting their every move, every step of the way. Let them know that you are in this thing called life together!
2. Discipline with love and positivity. All children need guidance and discipline by their parents. Set limits for your children early and remind them of the consequences of their negative actions with love and positivity, acknowledging the behavior which you want them to model.
3. Be a role model. Father’s are an essential role model for their children. A girl who spends time with a loving and respectful father, grows up to find a mate that will treat her as such. For a boy, a positive role model is essential to teaching him how to be a man. Father’s teach their children what is important by demonstrating kindness, respect, honesty, love, and responsibility.
4. Respect is essential. Respecting your children is one thing but showing respect for your children’s mother is essential. Parents who respect each other, provide a safe environment for their children. When children see parents respecting each other, even when they disagree, they are more likely to feel secure and accepted in the father-child relationship.
