Eight years ago, a ten-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha entered the White House to begin a journey of a lifetime alongside their parents.
Today, as we prepare to say good-bye to the famous teenagers, in a little over a week, it is the Bush twins that remind us that Malia and Sasha Obama will now join an exclusive lifetime club as former first kids.
In an open letter published by Time Magazine, the Bush daughters eloquently reminisce and encourage the sisters, offering advice as they prepare to make their transition, recounting the past eight years and telling the sisters that now it was time for them to, “learn who they are”.
This was not the first time that the Bush twins wrote to the Obama’s. They also penned a similar letter to the sisters in 2009 encouraging them ahead of Obama’s first inauguration, giving them some insight as to the adventures to come. It is, without question, hard to be a first kid. However, Malia and Sasha have done so with nothing less than elegance and grace. What a fittingly heartfelt way to say goodbye to two young women that have touched the hearts of a nation.
