Kim Porter and her daughters, D’Lila and Jessie, were three of many stars in attendance at the screening of Amazon’s An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has To Win on Monday. The celebrity mom and her girls were all smiles while posing on the red carpet. D’Lila and Jessie rocked pink and white while Kim wore all white. The Combs twins’ t-shirts bore the phrase, “Dream Big” which is a saying that coincides with the film’s theme.

Melody (Marsai Martin) is a young girl in Detroit who challenges the social norm during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. From telling her teacher that the pledge of allegiance is a lie to boldly declaring her humanity to white children whose perception has been warped by adults, Melody is pushing all of the limits. Although her parents encourage her confidence, they are also concerned about the inevitable taunting that comes from young and old citizens. In the end, Melody learns that though hate is powerful, love is strong enough to conquer all.
An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has To Win is the ideal role for Marsai Martin who stars on ABC’s hit series ‘Black-ish.’ The young celebrity portrays the cute and sassy Diane who is always pushing the envelope with her twin brother by her side.
Marsai commented on her role as a Johnson family member on ‘Black-ish’ during an interview with Parade. “There’s no such thing as a perfect family,” the young star explained. “The Johnsons may have some real issues and real problems, but they’re still a great, lovable family.” Martin added, “Sometimes you can be very separate during the day, and then you come together, and it’s like, ‘Oh wait, we love each other!'”
