Jennifer Hudson and her son, David Otunga Jr., are doing great things for Chicago. The mother and son, along with Jennifer’s sister Julia, handed out thousands of school supplies to children in the city on Monday.
Jennifer made a sort of public service announcement during the giveaway at Kroc Center Chicago. “If you’re in Chicago, come out to the Kroc Center (1250 W 119th) and grab your school supplies! We have plenty left and we’re giving them out until we run out,” the singer wrote on Instagram. Jennifer also shared pictures of her and the family having fun at the giveaway.
Every year, Jennifer and Julia hold a back-to-school giveaway in honor of Hudson’s nephew, Julian King, who was murdered in 2008. “Julian would have been 15 this year,” Jennifer shared on Instagram. “Happy birthday my tugga bear (Julian d. King ) because U were here so many other children r blessed. We will always celebrate you.”
Hudson explained the significance of her and Julia’s back-to-school giveaway that they call Hatch Day. “I wanted my sister to look forward to her son’s birthday,” the singer shared. “Julian was a scholar of a child,” Jennifer added. “He was a giver as well. Hatch Day represents everything about him.”
Jennifer Hudson is the proud mother of one child. More than 5,000 children were given school supplies this year.
