Ellen Pompeo is focused on rearing girls who are confident and strong. The actress tells media that she surrounds Stella and Sienna with images of empowered African American women.
“My daughters are black so it’s very important to me that they see a lot of images of beautiful, powerful, strong black women,” Ellen shares. “Every time there is a black woman on a magazine cover, whether it is Kerry Washington or whoever it is, I make sure that magazine is in my house and on my table. For me, that’s super important.”
It’s also important for the girls to see President Obama and the family in the spotlight. “I feel really fortunate that they are growing up in a time [in which] the first president my daughter knows is Barack Obama,” Ellen says. “That’s an incredible gift.”
Seeing positive imagery is essential to 6-year-old Stella who decided to explore the world of medicine after visiting the set of Grey’s Anatomy with mom. “Linda Klein is our medical producer, wonderful woman [and] good friend of mine, and she just wants to go straight to Linda’s office and play with all the medical things,” Ellen said of her daughter last year. “She wants to be an emergency room doctor,” the actress added.
Ellen and husband Chris Ivery have two kids together. The couple’s youngest daughter, Sienna, will celebrate her second birthday next month.
