Sasha and Malia’s six-day summer trip to Africa is off to a royal start. The Obama girls accompanied their mom, Michelle Obama, as she met with Moroccan Princess Lalla Selma in Marrakesh on Monday.
Mrs. Obama sat down with Princess Selma to talk about girls and education in regions where literacy among women is not celebrated. The first lady and her daughters have served as both inspirations and advocates for the Let Girls Learn initiative that provides funding to Third World countries for the specific purpose of educating women.
“I’m traveling with my mother and my two daughters,” Michelle said while on her six-day tour of Africa. “This is the special girl-power unit of the Obama household. We left the president behind because he’s a boy.” She also encouraged the girls in the group to “keep fighting and stay in school. I’m here to shine a big, bright light on you.”
President and First Lady Michelle Obama are the proud parents of a high school graduate, Malia, who will begin her first year at Harvard University next year. Sasha is also doing great things in the academic sphere as she will begin her Junior year in high school this fall.
