Erykah Badu invites Fader magazine into her home for their May 2016 issue. In the publication, the mother of three talks about becoming a doula, motherhood, creativity and much more. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
On giving birth to all three of her children naturally and being a credentialed doula:
“I love motherhood,” she says. “It’s natural for me. Being a doula, or being a mom, or even, like, making food—it’s just breathing and trusting, and allowing the creativity to flow through.”
On her kids’ ability to speak more than one language:
“I just wanted to make sure that whenever I take over the country, I have a secretary of state, defense, and a peace ambassador at hand”
On her Social media presence:
“Being on Twitter, it sometimes feels like when I’m trying to talk to my kids—not that the people I debate with on Twitter are kids or below me—as a parent or an elder that’s been here for a while and they have a rebuttal. The whole world to me is kinda like a private joke between me and God sometimes, and that’s how I treat social media, too.”
