Will Smith had his sons with him at the 2016 MTV Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday. The all-around entertainer was the recipient of the Generation Award after accomplishing much in the industry these past few decades.
“When MTV first gave me this Generation Award, I thought it was code for the ‘old-a** dude award,'” Smith said during his acceptance speech. “I released my first record when I was 17, and this June marks 30 years in this business for me.”
Although he has spent a significant amount of years advocating for diversity in Hollywood, Smith told fans that he was still dedicated to the cause. “I’m dedicated to being a light in this world,” he said. “There’s so much suffering in this world … I just want you to know I am dedicated till I die to light and to love.”
Jaden and Trey were sitting beside their dad as he received accolades from fellow entertainers at the awards ceremony. “Will is a champion of diversity in Hollywood,” Halle Berry said. “[He blazes] a path for actors by showing that someone of any color can play any role, and can open any movie and win any award and be the biggest freaking movie star in the whole world.”
Queen Latifah also doted on Will saying, “There isn’t a nicer, generous, more thoughtful man in town. We love every single thing about you Will Smith.”
Will and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith have two kids, Jaden and Willow, together. Trey is Will’s son from a previous relationship.
