Sasha and Malia joined their parents on a hike on the Makiki Loop Trail before enjoying an evening meal at Morimoto’s Restaurant in Waikiki on Monday.

Regardless of how busy they are, the first family makes it a practice to eat dinner together. “At a certain point, let’s say 6:30 at night, I can go upstairs, I can have dinner with [Sasha and Malia], and if I have to go back to work, I can,” said the president during one interview. He further explained, “Being able to have dinner with them every night was something that I could enjoy more than I did before I was president. And that tradition has not changed, which has been great.”

The Obamas can especially appreciate the moments they have together after spending time with families of the San Bernardino terrorist attack that claimed the lives of fourteen county health workers earlier this month. “You had people from every background, every faith,” said the president during a recent press conference. “As difficult as this time is for them and for the entire community, they’re also representative of the strength and the unity and the love that exists in this community and in this country.”

President and First Lady Obama are the proud parents of two kids. Sasha and Malia celebrated their fourteenth and seventeenth birthdays earlier this year. Malia, the oldest of the two, will finish out her senior year in high school next year.
