The Paley Center for Media on Monday paid tribute to African-American achievements in television, honoring stars including producer Quincy Jones and actress Diahann Carroll. Yara Shahidi was one of many celebrities to attend the event held at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California.
Shahidi stars as eldest daughter Zoey on ABC’s “Black-ish. The actress recently opened up about why she accepted the role. “Before ‘Black-ish,’ I got offered a couple roles that were just — you know, they just didn’t portray black people very well, teenagers very well, me very well [or] anything like that, so I ended up turning them down,” she said. “But ‘Black-ish’ was perfect and timely.”
“It’s great that there are actors of color that are working and doing a brilliant job, but it’s still important to have a positive image or role model,” she added.
