Kimora Lee Simmons, 39 years old and pregnant with baby no.4, is not the same woman she was when she was head of Baby Phat or a reality TV star. Now, with a new fashion line geared towards a more grown-up clientele, Kimora explained, “I guess you would call it putting out a new image, but I think it’s more of an evolution.”
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), Kimora is proud to show off the new her, barefoot and pregnant. Her baby is due in April and in the meantime she is building up a new empire with KLS, Kimora Lee Simmons. The new fashion line is all about tailored-chic fashion reflective of this new phase in her life. “There’s a subtlety to the sexiness. It’s not overt,” she elaborated. “I’m not the same woman now. KLS isn’t catering to a teenage audience or a young party girl. I’m a serious businesswoman.”
But she’s not just a businesswoman, she’s also a mother. By her side is her eldest daughter, 14-year-old Ming, whose presence sparks a conversation about reality TV. Kimora stated that she sees a difference in reality TV today, and that it is no longer something she is interested in her family being a part of. “I feel like I got [my kids] out just in time, otherwise they would be running around. What 13-year-old needs to have their own TV show — Rich Kids of whatever? I don’t think so.”
Of course, celebrity kids in the entertainment business itself can be a bit much as well. But that is not the case for Ming, who aspires to work in finance. “She was at Goldman Sachs earlier,” Kimora said about her daughter, proudly adding, “She said hello to Lloyd Blankfein. She wants to be a banker.” It’s where Kimora’s current husband, Tim Leissner, works.
It seems that Kimora’s new toned down look and lifestyle are here to stay. “This is a great departure,” she said of her new approach to fashion and business.
The new line will be launching soon at her very own retail store in Beverly Hills, currently under construction.
