The public has already been anxiously awaiting the premier of Annie this holiday season for months, and the anticipation only builds as trailers, clips, interviews, and music sneak peeks continue to drop. This is perhaps the biggest of all:
“Opportunity” is a whole new song for the Annie legend, and the sneak preview is already here.
After decades of broadway success for the hit musical and two motion pictures featuring the iconic red-headed, freckled, orphan who originated as a 1920s comic strip character, the story is finally getting a bold but welcomed update. The rags-to-riches story follows a young optimist living in a cold and abusive orphanage who finally gets the love she deserves when a millionaire bachelor scoops her up and takes on the role of Daddy Warbucks. It’s always been a heart-warmer, but it is long overdue for a 21st century makeover. Sure, the concept was worrisome at first, but Quvenzhane has been winning everyone over.
Expect this modernized version to restore the classic Annie songs the public has come to treasure, with minor (relevant) updates. But also expect some new tunes that will likely grow on viewers as quickly as the old ones have. For instance, “Opportunity.”
Written by Australian pop star Sia, the song expresses Annie’s appreciation for the life Will Stacks (the new Warbucks) can offer her. This clip features Quvenzhane making good use of her recent vocal lessons as she belts about not wasting this opportunity to have a real family. The scene takes place at a Guggenheim Museum where Annie has been asked to make a speech. Instead, she sings her heart out.
Annie hits theatres December 19th.
