October is National Spina Bifida Month, and Boris Kodjoe is not letting it end without sharing his daughter’s story. The actor recently opened up about his and wife Nicole Ari Parker’s eldest child’s battle with the disease in an exclusive interview with Hello Beautiful.
“Our daughter Sophie was diagnosed with spina bifida and thank God she has leg function. But she doesn’t have bladder function so she has to catheterize herself every three hours,” said Kodjoe. The star also gave an in-depth explanation of the birth defect, and advised parents to take action in preventing the disease. “It’s up to you to protect yourself with folic acid,” shared Boris. “Folic acid is a vitamin B that prevents birth defects such as spina bifida by up to 75%. That’s a big number.”
The Kodjoes have been working hard to spread awareness about spina bifida ever since Sophie was diagnosed with the illness a few years back. The couple sponsors many research efforts through their non-profit organization, Sophie’s Voice, and takes every opportunity to share the causes along with the effects of spina bifida.
Boris and Nicole have two kids.
