Jhene Aiko recently caught up with Angie Martinez of Power 105.1. The 26-year-old recording artist talked a little about how her daughter (Namiko, 5) is dealing with her success, her musical style, and her relationship with her sisters, one of whom is also pursuing music.

Namiko was born in 2008 to Jhene and r&b artist O’Ryan. Jhene said that while her daughter is “kind of” grasping everything that is going on, her biggest concern is having her mom nearby. “She wants me around.” The singer explained that she had to tell her daughter, “‘that’s what we’re working towards.” She joked that Namiko has to see Beyonce with her daughter on TV but that “we’re not at that level… the label won’t give me an extra ticket. Not yet” she laughed.

But in all seriousness, Jhene noted that being away from her little one is difficult. “When I’m not with her, like just mentally… that strain is like a-whole-nother thing.” Luckily, the singer has a very supportive family, so her daughter is cared for and surrounded by love whether she is home or not. She told Complex, “I think if I work really hard now, I can slow down in a few years and even bring her to my shows.”

Coming from an artistic family, and being the youngest of five siblings, it’s no surprise Jhene can rely on their support. But the rising star also talked about the decision for her and sister Mila J to not work together. “I feel like the style of music that I’m doing, and where I want to go, maybe doesn’t meet up with the style that she’s doing.” She also added, “It gets really messy if you’re working with family.”

Meanwhile, Jhene continues to soothe her fans with her mellow beats and individual style. When asked about her sound, Jhene has found it best to just say “it’s me.” These days, Jhene is very busy, preparing for the release of her debut album, Souled Out, set to hit stores on September 9th, and her King of the Fall tour which kicks off on the 19th.
