Jada Pinkett-Smith recently spoke to Net-A-Porter’s The Edit magazine about everything from her parenting style to her relationship with husband Will Smith. She admitted that although her lifestyle may not be “conventional”, it’s something she is quite proud of.
One glance at Willow or Jaden Smith and it becomes quite clear that these kids are not raised in any sort of “typical household standard”. Immediately striking is what comes off as a true sense of individualism and freedom. Recently, this caused quite a stir in tabloids when Willow was photographed in a bed with an older male friend who was shirtless. The incident resulted in an uproar but in the end, Jada defended her daughter noting that the moment was entirely innocent. “Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” the actress and mother of two said to The Edit. She went on, “I want my kids to be happy and I want them to be themselves.”
Her approach to parenting, she explained, is more open-minded than what has perhaps been considered ‘normal’. “I’m not a conventional parent, which I take a lot of pride in,” she gloated to US Weekly. “What I do with Willow, is I give her the opportunity to be empowered by having herself first.”
And it seems to be working. Both Willow and Jaden are in the midst of blossoming careers in the entertainment industry, and simply exude confidence and strength in the public eye.
As for her relationship with Will, Jada has learned to laugh off the negative rumors.”When you know that what’s going on in your house is so the opposite [of what’s being said], and you also know that when there’s mystery, people fill in the gaps, that’s okay. And then you look back at it and look at how creative people can be, and it’s kind of entertaining. We can laugh because it’s so ridiculous. But I get it. I don’t take it personally.”
The Gotham star described her 17-year-long marriage in the most adoring terms when she said, “Will, to me, encompasses everything.” She also pointed out that overcoming preconceptions about what a husband and wife should be allowed her to see her partner “in all his glory”. “I’m just ecstatic about that,” she added.
