Spike Lee and the family attend the premiere of Da Sweet Blood of Jesus at SVA Theater in New York City. The film made its debut during the 2014 American Black Film Festival on Monday. All members of the family except Spike hit the red carpet in black attire. The independent filmmaker opted to wear white instead.
Lee’s newest film is a remake of the 1973 classic Ganja and Hess. In the movie, the central character becomes addicted to blood after coming into contact with an ancient weapon from Africa.
Although many have characterized it as a vampire film, Lee says that Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is nothing of the sort. “Vampires can’t go to the Fort Green projects in daytime,” exclaims the star. Spike used Kickstarter to raise funds for the creation of the movie centrally because “there are some films no studio will ever make.”
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus was one of several films presented at this year’s American Black Film Festival. Spike Lee and wife Tonya have two kids, Satchel and Jackson, together.
