Liya Kebede is passionate about motherhood and maternal health. The model recently partnered with David Yurman, famous jewelry and timepiece designer, to raise funds for her foundation that will go towards helping Ethiopian women experience healthy births.
David Yurman has promised to donate a percentage of retail sales from his website to Liya’s foundation during the weekend of May 3rd. The designer has decided to make his contribution in honor of Mother’s Day, which is on Sunday, May 11, 2014.
Liya has worked tirelessly to spread awareness and bring help to the women of Ethiopia, who are currently at greater risk of dying while giving birth to children than expectant moms in developed nations like the United States. “Having a child is a momentous occasion, but for too many women it continues to pose serious health risks,” said the model during a recent interview with Vogue. “In Africa and other developing regions around the world, too few receive the healthcare they need during pregnancy and childbirth. With all of the knowledge and technology we have today there is simply no reason a woman should die giving birth. At the Foundation we are working with a network of leading health organizations to create universal access to safe birth services, connecting women to the care they need to flourish and raise healthy families.”
Kebede expressed much happiness in having the opportunity to partner with David Yurman telling media, “I am delighted to partner with David Yurman and their valued customers this Mother’s Day to make safe motherhood possible for more women.”
Liya has two children, Suhul and Raee, with husband Kassy Kebede. The couple wed in 2000.
