TAMERA GIVES ADVICE ON SEPARATION ANXIETY

It’s been a few months since Tamera Mowry-Housley has given birth to her son, and the actress is already having to deal with the pains of separation. Although Aden is not old enough to attend school just yet, he is of age for a nanny which challenges Tamera to say goodbye to her little while she works. Having experienced the breathtaking effects of separation anxiety firsthand, Mowry-Housley decided to give parents a few tips on how to deal with being away from their kids for short or extended periods of time.

Tip #1: Embrace the Separation

Tamera says: “The first thing to do when you start feeling anxious is to remind yourself that life is full of separation – but that isn’t a bad thing! It’s all about your perspective. Instead of seeing separation from your child as a negative thing to be sad over, try to see it in a positive light. Some separation is healthy to your child’s development, and allows you to take time to do fun, mind-healthy things for yourself as well.”

Tip #2: Trust the Nanny

What did Housley do? “I introduced my nanny to Aden gradually – this made him more comfortable with her, and made me worry less when I left him for the first time because I had observed the way she was with him. She is amazing! Every time I started feeling nervous, I would just picture an instance where I witnessed her comfort him or take care of him. Replaying those moments really calmed me down, because I was reassured that that’s how she was taking care of him without me. In other words, he was in loving, safe, good and able hands!”

Tip #3: Keep the Goodbyes Short

Tamera advises: “Save the tears and drawn-out goodbyes because that’ll only upset your child and probably make you feel worse too! If you treat the goodbye as a positive, normal thing, your child will see it that way too. If you act like the goodbye is the saddest thing in the world (which, at the time I really felt like it was!), your child will see it as a negative thing too and feel like there’s something wrong.”

Aden is Tamera and husband Adam Housley’s first child together. The couple welcomed the little one into the world on November 12, 2012.
