Jennifer Hudson returned to her hometown to celebrate her son, David Jr., and nephew’s, Julian King, birthday earlier this week. In honor of her deceased nephew who would have turned 11-years-old this year, Jennifer, along with sister Julia, gave away school supplies to 5,000 underprivileged children who lived in the area.
Hudson’s nephew was murdered by William Balfour in the family home alongside her mother and brother in 2008. The singer and her sister decided to establish the back-to-school giveaway, named ‘Hatch Day,’ last year to celebrate Julian’s life. Jennifer was overwhelmed by the success of this year’s efforts saying, “Oh my God, it’s just overwhelming. It’s good tears. It’s beautiful tears. We just started this last year. This is the second year, and to have a vision, and then to see it manifest.”
Hudson and her family recently participated in the 13-day trial of Balfour that sentenced him to life in prison for murdering the singer’s mom, brother, and nephew. After testifying and being present for the ruling, Jennifer says that things are getting better. “I feel as though we have a new beginning, and it’s beautiful. You know, we’re still blessed, and I mean we’ve had our loss, but we’re finding our way,” said the singer.
Jennifer also celebrated her son David Jr.’s birthday this past weekend. Below are birthday pictures of the singer, her fiance David Otunga Sr., and the little tot.
