Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, is opening up one year after his untimely death.
During an interview with CBS Mornings, which was recorded before Tenisha filed a lawsuit against the late actor’s mother over his estate, she reflected on grief and the emotional challenges of parenting through loss.
“The emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes, you know?” she said. “And so, I have to, for myself, decide, what do I have to give right now in this moment? And whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter and then the second is myself.”
Tenisha said that in the immediate aftermath of her husband’s death, her focus shifted entirely to caring for their 9-year-old daughter.
“All I could think about was my daughter and what I needed to do to continue to be her mother and be her only parent,” she said. “But for us, we’re his wife and child, there’s no moving on.”
Asked about the day her husband died, Tenisha described it as the “worst day of my life. Feels unfair. Feels unfair.”
Warner died in July 2025 at the age of 54 while on a family trip to Costa Rica.
Two months after Warner’s death, Tenisha launched the Warner Family Foundation and River & Ember, an organization that provides parents with tools to help children navigate difficult emotions.
She announced the initiative on Instagram alongside a photo from their wedding day, which she shared on what would have been their anniversary.
“Thank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time,” she wrote. “Tomorrow marks our anniversary — and my heart is wide open. For the first time, I’m sharing a glimpse of the love that began it all.”
She continued, “I can still hear my husband’s laugh, still feel the way he made room for every part of me — every tear, every dream. Together we carry the legacy my husband and I began — one that nurtures children’s inner light and gives young artists the freedom to create outside the lines. This is love, still moving. Still making. Still carrying us forward.”
More recently, Tenisha made headlines after filing a lawsuit against Malcolm-Jamal’s mother, Pamela Warner, who serves as trustee of the family trust. According to the filing, Tenisha alleges there are unpaid debts connected to the estate.
During her conversation with Gayle King, which took place before the lawsuit was filed, Tenisha was asked whether she remained in contact with Malcolm-Jamal’s mother.
“Yeah…” she replied before pausing. “Right now, everybody — all of his family members and everyone who has lost him — they are grieving. You know, it’s been the biggest loss for all of us. Right now, my daughter and I are just like….”
Although she did not elaborate further, Tenisha made it clear throughout the interview that her primary focus remains supporting her daughter while preserving Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s legacy through the work they began together.
