Madonna is marking a major milestone for daughter, Mercy James.
The singer, 67, shared a personal birthday tribute to her daughter Mercy James as she celebrated turning 20 on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026. In a post on Instagram, Madonna uploaded a collection of family photos and short video clips that offered a rare look at Mercy’s life away from the spotlight and highlighted the bond the two share.
“Happy Birthday beautiful Mercy James,” she began her sweet tribute to her daughter. “Your tribal name is Chifundo which means Mercy!! A perfect name for you.”
The Material Girl continued writing, “You have always been the quietest of all my children, but still waters run deep. And deep, you are. Always thinking, always thoughtful, kind and respectful.”
She concluded her post, expressing how proud she is watching Mercy grow into adulthood.
“You are talented in so many ways and honestly, you can do anything you put your mind to. I’m excited to see which direction you decide to shine your radiant light!”
The post included moments from different stages of Mercy’s life, showing her growing up surrounded by music, family and travel. Many of the photos captured quiet, candid moments that reflected Mercy James’ personality rather than red carpet appearances and moments.
Mercy James, whose full name is Chifundo Mercy James, was born in Malawi and adopted by Madonna in 2009. Over the years, the young woman has remained mostly out of the public eye compared to some of her siblings, occasionally appearing in family photos or performances with her mom.
In addition to Mercy James, Madonna is also mom to five other children. With ex Carlos Leon, she shares daughter Lourdes Leon, now 29. She welcomed son Rocco Ritchie, now 25, with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. She later adopted son David Banda, now 20, and twins Stella and Estere, now 13, from Malawi.
As Mercy enters her 20s, Madonna’s message made one thing clear: she’s ready to watch her daughter step into whatever future she chooses, and so are we! Happy birthday, Mercy James!
