Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be known for his larger-than-life presence on screen, but at home, he credits his three daughters with teaching him lessons that changed his outlook on life.
The Smashing Machine star, who is dad to Simone, 24, as well as Jasmine, 9, and Tiana, 6, with wife Lauren Hashian, says fatherhood has shifted the way he sees the world.
“They taught me to be selfless,” the father-of-three shared during an interview with E! News’ Francesca Amiker at the Los Angeles premiere of the Benny Safdie film. “I grew up an only child and when you’re an only child, like me, I can’t speak for all only children out there, you think about yourself first.”
He added, “That was me for a long time until I had my girls.”
For The Rock, raising daughters hasn’t just been about responsibility, it’s about rediscovering joy through their eyes.
“The joy of walking through life with this curiosity,” he explained. “There’s this great saying I heard some time ago that goes, ‘Every man wants a son, but needs a daughter.’ And I have three, and there is nothing like that bond between a father and his daughter. I feel that deeply with my girls.”
While working on the set of his new movie, The Smashing Machine, in which he portrays MMA fighter Mark Kerr, the 53-year-old also found ways to connect family with his professional life.
The movie reunited him with Emily Blunt, his Jungle Cruise costar, and their children became close along the way.
“When they play,” the actress told E! News earlier this month, “they are the cutest together.”
Although busy schedules have made post-production playdates more difficult, Blunt added, telling The Rock, “I want to bring them out next to you for sure.”
Reuniting with Blunt on screen gave Johnson one of the most fulfilling experiences of his career. The Fast and Furious actor told the news outlet, “It was the most gratifying experience I’ve ever had in my life and in my career….separate from, of course, my babies being born, being a dad.”
For Johnson, his proudest role will always be that of “girl dad.”
