Gabrielle Union is sharing how her daughters Zaya, 17, and Kaavia, 6, are bonding before her eldest goes to college.
In a recent exclusive with People Magazine, the actress shared that her daughters have been enjoying extra bonding time now that they’re attending the same school.
“It’s funny because Zaya’s a senior and [Kaavia’s] in kindergarten at the same school,” Union shared in her interview. “And so during Kaav’s lunch, Zaya comes and hangs out with Kaav. And this is really special that they’re at the same school, at least for one year.”
Although Zaya has not officially announced where she’ll be heading this fall, she did visit the University of Washington. in March 2024. While her final decision remains unknown, it has been revealed that she plans to study astrobiology.
“[She’s] an astrobiology major,” Union said. “So we can’t help with that. We haven’t been able to help with homework since the fourth grade, but we’re excited for next year.”
Union shares her children with husband and NBA legend Dwyane Wade. The 52-year-old is stepmom to Zaya as well as Wade’s other children: son Zaire, 22, and son Xavier, 11. Together, Wade and Union are parents to Kaavia. Wade is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris.
The Being Mary Jane actress shares more than a stepparent role with Zaya—the two have a close mother-daughter bond.
In a cover interview with Seventeen Magazine, the teen told the outlet that, when it comes to dating, her parents are “really cool about it,” but it is with Union that she exclusively “love[s] to dish the dirt” with.
“Me and my stepmom love to dish the dirt and tap into the high school gossip. She gets excited for me when I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this person.’ “
