Ellen Pompeo, 55, was joined by her husband, Chris Ivery, and two of their three children—daughter Stella, 15, and son Eli, 8— as she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 29.
During the event, Pompeo shouted out her 10-year-old daughter, Sienna, who wasn’t in attendance.. “Everybody say Sienna because she’s not here!” the actress said with a smile, referencing her middle child.
During her speech, Pompeo took a moment to recognize the children who were there to celebrate with her. “This doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen easily. It takes a village. I love you Stella. I love you Eli.”
Pompeo has been candid and open about raising her daughters to be strong, confident young women. She makes it a priority to surround them with positive representations of empowered Black women.
“My daughters are black so it’s very important to me that they see a lot of images of beautiful, powerful, strong black women,” Ellen shared in a previous interview. “Every time there is a black woman on a magazine cover, whether it is Kerry Washington or whoever it is, I make sure that magazine is in my house and on my table. For me, that’s super important.”
Pompeo has also touched on her kids’ interest in her work on Grey’s Anatomy. While her oldest daughter “was a fan”, her youngest daughter hasn’t watched an episode of the long-standing fan favorite as of yet.
“My 15-year-old [Stella] has seen it, and now my 10-year-old wants to see it,” she told Jimmy Kimmel in an interview. “She’s not ready, but a lot of kids in her class have seen it.” Pompeo added, “No judgment on other parents. But I don’t want my daughter to see me in my underwear on television just yet. But all her classmates have so… That makes for great conversation at pick-up.”
