The journey to motherhood for many women is filled with unforeseen challenges. For some, the route to become a parent involves medical intervention on a multitude of levels. For rapper Eve, her journey to parenthood was not an easy one. The 45-year-old was, at first, reluctant to receive medical intervention, and try IVF, for this particular reason.
âI come from a family, we are not religious, but we believed in god, there’s a whole element of that. And being a woman, we put so much pressure on ourselves, thinking as a woman, it’s just supposed to happen,â the 45-year-old rapper said in an exclusive interview with Good Morning America host, Michael Strahan.
The âWhoâs That Girlâ rapper previously revealed that she suffered an ectopic pregnancy in 2006. With the desire to become a mother, she would have to look beyond her reluctance to try IVF due to religious pressure and the pressure that she put on herself, knowing that she âneed[ed] help.â
â⊠I think there was a level of me having to talk to myself and say, “âNo, you need help, and that’s okay.â”
In 2022, Eve and her husband, founder & CEO of Gumball 3000, Maximillion Cooper, welcomed their son Wilde Wolf to the world. The âHeart of Queensâ rapper said in her interview that if she hadnât changed her mind about IVF, then she wouldnât have her adorable son.
âBecause I would not have my baby, I would not have Wilde. So I am grateful.â
Eve, like many Black women, suffered from endometriosis and fibroids, that for some can cause fertility issues. Endometriosis affects up to one and 10 American women whereas fibroids affect 20-25% of American women of reproductive age. Black women are 80% more susceptible to being diagnosed with fibroids.
âI had to go to a specialist and she said you have 14 fibroids and you have to have surgery to get rid of this,â she told Strahan, continuing to talk in more depth about her ectopic pregnancy, which she details in great length in her book entitled, âWhoâs That Girl.â
In addition to her two-year-old son, Wilde Wolf, The Barbershop actress is also a loving stepmother to Cooperâs four older children from a previous marriage.
âWhoâs That Girlâ is now available at bookstores worldwide.
