Declan Lopez is not even out of kindergarten and she is already reading on a fourth grade level. The six-year-old is a bona fide Mensa member with an IQ of 138. To put this in context, Albert Einstein’s IQ was around 160.
Hailing from Dover, New Jersey, Declan displays a keen interest in arts, science, math, and geography. According to her mother, Meachel Lopez, Declan’s teachers are nothing less than supportive of this little genius.
“Her current school offers her a once-a-week coding game to attempt to provide her with some added stimulation as they currently do not offer a gifted program until the third grade,” Lopez said in a recent interview with USA Today,
To ensure that her daughter is kept mentally stimulated, Lopez also teaches her daughter at home.
Lopez told WPVI-TV that they started noticing Declan’s high-level of intelligence when she was 18-months-old.
“We were on a trip in the airport, and she just started to count in Mandarin,” Lopez said, still marveling at the moment.
Although Declan can intellectually rival someone four times her age, Lopez wants to make sure that her daughter also simply enjoys being a kid.
“We try to foster a healthy and active social life as well, with events offered by Rockaway Township, playdates with her friends, trips to the mall (since she loves fashion),” Lopez shared with the publication.
The mother-of-two continued, “We want her to feel empowered and creative, so we will try any and all pursuits that spark her interest, within reason of course,” she added that, “the balancing act is a challenge.”
When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Declan said, either an “… astronomer, an actress, a surgeon, and a teacher to name a few.”
Whether she knows it or not, Declan is already a mentor-in-the-making as her younger brother is showing signs of being gifted as well.
