Awards season is in full swing and actress, activist, and entrepreneur Marsai Martin is in the thick of it all. The talented teen recently received the Rising Star Award at the 2023 “BET Her Awards,” and we can say that it was definitely well-deserved.

“Black women are the backbone of their communities,” Tavia Pitts, Senior Vice President of Ad Sales at BET Media Group said in a press release. “For centuries Black women have done it all, displaying strength and grace that flows naturally in every act. It is an honor to have the “BET Her Awards” return to celebrate the incredible Black women who contribute to society and show unparalleled resilience and courage to propel our communities forward.”
The Rising Star Award honors a “young, gifted and Black” rising star who is making a difference in their community.
The 18-year-old mini-mogul is quickly becoming a true power player in Hollywood. She is not only a trend-setting fashionista, but she owns her own production company, and has launched a nail care beauty brand, Marsai by Marsai, that has taken over the beauty industry. Additionally, Martin is an outspoken activist, speaking up for not only women, but race equality and equity as well.

However, because of her young age, many people don’t necessarily take her seriously when it comes to seeing her as a leader in the industry. But, Martin is not letting that stop her star from rising.
“In so many ways I’m being underestimated a lot because of my age,” Marsai said during a past last year. “I used to get, ‘You’re too young to do whatever’ a lot,” she stated. “But I think now that people see the work that I’m doing and how busy I am with trying to bring out content … they don’t say that anymore. [Now] it’s more of them witnessing the unexpected.”
