Martin Luther King III describes his father as a doer who “showed us that we can achieve our dreams if we focus and work unrelentingly on them.” He recently wrote a book about his dad that teaches children about the characteristics of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and encourages them to be achieve their goals in life.
My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. talks about the type of civil rights activist Reverend King was and gives readers the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild thinking about how life could have been in the 1960s. Although great for everyone, Martin III’s book is created especially for kids in the same age category as his 5-year-old daughter, Yolanda. “Our most precious resource, in my personal view, is our children,” says King. “So if you can impact the children to understand that nonviolence can be a way of life, then you can set a tone for generations yet unborn.”
King was one among thousands celebrating the legacy of his father by marching on Washington this past weekend. The son of the late civil rights leader made a compelling speech upon arriving, speaking from to the same spot where Dr. King delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech decades ago, that encouraged attendees to keep striving towards equality in everyday life. “This is not the time for nostalgic commemoration,” explained Martin III to the masses. “The task is not done. The journey is not complete. We can and we must do more.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while standing outside of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. His son, Martin Luther King III, and wife Arndrea welcomed his only grandchild into the world on May 25, 2008.
