Gabrielle Union says her stepdaughter Zaya Wade is “very, very happy” as she wraps up her first year of college.

The 53-year-old star, who is married to NBA legend Dwyane Wade, spoke with People Magazine in an exclusive interview, telling the outlet that the 18-year-old is thriving as she follows her passion for science.
“She’s found other people who are just as into research and data and astrobiology,” The Being Mary Jane actress said. She also admitted that she and her husband sometimes struggle to keep up with their daughter’s academic interests.
“I’m gonna say that [Dwyane and I] probably failed in that department,” she joked. “Because she would say things and we’re like [nods head], and I’m just trying to Google under the table — I have no idea what [she’s] talking about.”

The Nebraska-native added that Zaya’s opportunities have been especially exciting to watch. “She’s working with some of the world’s leading biologists, so she’s very, very happy where she’s at,” she said.
Outside of the classroom, Zaya continues to be a strong voice for LGBTQ+ community and their visibility. The model and influencer came out as transgender in 2020 and has remained a very dedicated and outspoken for the community, highlighting the importance of queer rights and representation.

During Gabrielle’s interview with People, she also offered guidance for parents who are learning how to best support their children through similar journeys.
“As long as you lead with love and that your child knows that you will be there no matter what, and [that] we can figure this out together and that I’m gonna make mistakes but please correct me … so I can learn to not make the same mistakes more than once …. As long as you start with, ‘My child is not disposable,’ [you] kinda can’t go wrong after that,” she said.
She added, “Just lead with love and respect. Your child’s peace and safety should be your number one concern. Less … ‘How are the neighbors or family members going to react?’ ”

In addition to being stepmother to Zaya Wade, Gabrielle is also stepmother to Zaire Wade and Xavier Wade. The Bring It On actress shares Kaavia James, 8, with the NBA legend.
