Social media, for the most part, dominates our everyday lives. From Instagram, to X, to Facebook, TikTok and beyond, the platforms have become the number one way people consume both news and fun. On average, a person can spend three hours or more a day switching between platforms. In lieu of the recent ban and then potential temporary return of TikTok, Chrissy Teigen had an epiphany regarding social media change. The mother-of-four is advocates for a social media curfew.
In a series of videos posted to her Instagram stories, the 39-year-old revealed her suggestions for change. Clad in a towel, lying in bed, she began, “I personally think that one day there will be the most incredible rule, my first rule would be — I think the government or some kind of ethics committee, somebody, should shut off social media between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Leave it all up.”
The former model said in the midst of the 14-hour TikTok ban that took place on January 19.
She continued, “Everyone gets to do anything they want, but only between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Shut it off. Done.”
The cookbook author then went on to address her younger followers letting them there was indeed life before social media, saying that it “was great”.
“Guys, life was great. Life was awesome before this. I know it’s hard to see it now. But it’s doable. It’s very doable.”
Teigen concluded, “This doesn’t have to be our lives. And I say this for myself as well because — obviously — I’m on here [social media] right now doing this. But it doesn’t have to define us or be our whole lives.”
Teigen may be on to something. According to various research sources, social media can be both addictive and dangerous for us all, especially younger users.
Per a 2023 report by the Pew Research Center, researchers found that 46% of teenagers (ages 13 to 17) state that they feel “anxious” or “depressed” due to social media use. The survey also revealed that 41% of teens also feel pressure to present a perfect life online, which can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, distress, and depression.
