Big Sean’s latest single, “On Up,” is a touching tribute to his one-year and eight-month-old son, Noah Hasani Anderson.
“Ayy, I wanna dedicate this one to my son, Noah Hasani, Daddy love you, boy, yeah,” Big Sean declares at the track’s start.
As the song continues, Sean shares his hopes and fears about raising his child in a challenging world.
He raps in the first verse, “I look into my son’s eyes and still see his innocence / I see my inner child in him and still the remnants / Will he lose it to the world as an emanator / Or is it something that in me and his mama had instilled in him.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Noah’s godfather, Lawrence Lamont, is filmed from the perspective of the little one. The video offers a glimpse into a day in the life of the child, featuring private moments with parents Sean and Jhené Aiko.
In a recent interview with Charlamagne Tha God, Big Sean went on to talk more about his experiences with fatherhood.
He said, “Having a kid for me has been one of the most, like, scary, scariest things—most beautiful but scariest in a way of like it’s a new territory of new emotions that I didn’t even know I could have. Like the way that I love my son and feel connected to him in all moments and consider him, it’s transforming me for the better.”
He continued, It’s also like a very soft spot. It’s like, I could do without anything, but I can’t do it without him, you know what I’m saying? So I thank God every day for his presence and him waking up and his health.”
Sean also revealed his daily affirmations for his son, saying, “I have these affirmations I say every day, and I’m real serious about it because I really appreciate who he is and what he’s here to do. I think he’s here to do some great things, but I definitely am raising him out of love. Any fear, it’s not really fear, but any time there’s uncertainty, I have to trust that it’s all going to work out for the best.”
