COCO GAUFF MAKES HISTORY AS YOUNGEST TEAM USA FEMALE FLAG-BEARER

Coco Gauff is set to carry the U.S. flag at the Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday, making her the youngest American to ever receive this honor. The 20-year-old tennis star will share this prestigious role with LeBron James, who was named the male flag bearer earlier this week.

Gauff will also make history as the first tennis player to serve as a U.S. flag bearer at either an Opening or Closing Ceremony. Fellow teammate and friend, Christopher Eubanks delivered the news of Gauff’s honor during a press conference.

“So obviously, I think most of you guys know, Coco and I have been really close from a really young age. I’ve got to see this girl grow up, so I’m sure she’s very excited to be here at her first Olympics. It’s a pretty special moment,” Eubanks began.

“Your year last year was incredible. You obviously captured the world by storm. You captured your first grand slam. I think you kind of showcased to the world in the U.S. and abroad, how special of a person and tennis player you are. And I think because you are so special, you have the honor of wearing this jacket during the opening ceremony and being a flag bearer,” Eubanks said as he vested the young athlete with the white flag bearer jacket.

Upon hearing the news, the 20-year-old was truly shocked, not expecting to receive such an honor.

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honour of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony,” Gauff said in a statement. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is.”

CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) commented on Gauff’s honor in a statement saying that, “To be nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about the way in which Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA.”

Make sure to tune-in  as Gauff is slated to compete in both the singles and doubles at Roland Garros. The Olympic tennis competition will begin on Saturday, July 27!
